its too late to blog so i'll do a good followup post tomorrow during the lunch break.

What i really need to get off my chest now now now is... Whattheheck was that burst of nagging just now?! Sorry if i cannot tolerate more nagging than what is necessary. To get a point across, you need only say it once. Don't need to make me feel like i'm a hugefuck burden to the family or I just ruined your day by forgetting to dispose of away a used container.

Conversation is what other normal family members have. And nagging is not conversation. Instead of asking how my day is or adding anything that is of worth to building a relationship, you just unleash a shitstorm of disciplinary crap on us (speaking not just for myself here). C'mon la, it's not like i don't know what to do. Obviously I might have been caught up in something else or yah, maybe i was just plain lazy to do it at that moment...but I never expected you to pick up after my TEMPORARY mess. And some of the things are so menial, i can't believe anyone else would be affected by it.

Maybe my mess reminds you of my father and how he screwed up your life and you think i'm gonna mess up your life too. Perhaps you might think that the screwing-up-my-life trait is genetic and hereditary and it might have been passed onto me, his daughter. News flash: Only people in your life are allowed to screw with it. Kindly be informed that I have been excluded from your life since you decided all you wanna do after work is watch teevee and talk to your friends on the phone. It has come to a point that we cant even carry on a decent conversation at the dining table without the teevee. *laughs*

I have come to a conclusion. Anything said more than once in the future, coupled with that ridiculous tone + overrepeated inane comments will be ignored. Only because flaring up causes me to feel guilty.

First day back! Ciao everyone!
Wa Singapore is SO hot. zomg.
how did i survive here the past 20 years.

So first day back and the NDRally is on, with PM Lee doing his best to psyche everyone up.
i.e. injecting some much-needed pride back into Singaporeans.
He tries his best to engage the youth of this generation by putting in some transformer vid as an example.
Next thing you know, self absorbed people on FB start flaming PM. Like hello?
What has the man done to you? Obviously he's not staging the NDR to rally votes.
You know, i've found that the people who complain the most are those who have been cooped up on our island through the span of their lives. Which is sad.

While i have not seen the world, i have been doing a decent amount of travelling in recent years.
In spite of seeing a fair bit of Asia and EU, I still feel SG is the best country to live in.
Friends and family aside, i base my judgement on the following

1. Language (spoken, signs, ease of communication)
2. Getting around (commuting from place to place)
3. Arts and culture
4. Shopping (grocery shopping included)
5. General cost of standard of living

While we may not have excelled in all the above criteria, we definitely were not in the bottom of any.
Prolly the only 2 countries which come close to SG's standard of living is London/Sweden.
But London is too ex and Sweden's main language is Swedish.
And while we may envy other bigger countries for their space, its easy to forget that not every space in their country is well utilized.
One more thing i can't stand. People dissing LKY for no apparent reason and calling him senile. What happened to respect.

I have been touring the most of Europe for the past month, and now it's one week to homecoming.

Just to jolt my own memory a little, my entire itinerary has covered:

after Amsterdamage it was pretty much a quick whizz to Belgium(Brugge) and a quick ferry ride across the english channel to London. Have been in Britain ever since 7 July.

Then in Britain we did more internal travelling: Manchester, Liverpool, York, Edinburgh, Durham, London, Leeds, and of course Newcastle.

Whole thing still feels like a dream. I do realise how lucky i am.

Will write more soon. Hate blogging via blogger.

Gonna share w you what i've been listening to of late.

So i guess this post will officially end the writing drought.
Been so caught up with exams the past 2 months.
Neglected some of the more finer things in life. Like blogging and guitarring.
And now that exams are over, new stuff await me.
Like packing my bags for EU and UK. Really, i can't wait.
Flying this tuesday, for all who wanna send me off.

This trip ain't coming cheap though.
Because my Lenovo has been behaving erratically since the first day i got it,
mum co-paid for a new laptop so that i could do my work proper in school over there.
She's awesome. and i really should treat her better.
Not just cos of the new laptop, DUH.

And now that exams are over... it's time to sort out other pressing problems.
Subject of constant worry: Boys.
I'm sorta dating someone now, and hush, cos he doesn't read this.
He's both the splendidly perfect and utterly imperfect guy at the same time.
Compassionate, intelligent, gentlemanly, reliable, looking out for my interests.
But there's something about the way we hang out, and pardon the engineering jargon,
It's like 2 gears that don't mesh properly.
The machine still functions, but not at its best capacity.
Prolly won't be much more dates in the future.

And all around me, my closest friends are shopping for engagement rings,
and applying for apartments w their boyfriends.
Sigh... Quoting Qui-Gon Jinn,

Feel like rewatching the entire Starwars and Harry potter series.
Said guy above ordered a Deathly hallows tee for me.
WHAT?! you don't know what the deathly hallows mean?

Elections are coming up and its amazing to see that people have different views on everything.
I love it when everyone sits down at a table and discuss their standpoint etc.
We really cant afford to be ignorant about the issues of this nation,
especially when so many foreigners are taking up citizenship here.
The fact is that they won't know our island like we do,
and probably won't give two hoots about the election and stuff.

Was just watching the latest ep of Survivor and the ideals of racism were brought up by *drumroll* Phillip.
Cutting to the chase, Phillip (black man) brought up the N-word because he felt that Steve (white man on the LOSING tribe) called him crazy and made him out to be a racist.
It's like nowadays we hear the N-word in rap/pop songs and how its so casually dropped among the African Americans. How is it a big deal?
Anyway, toward the end of the episode even the host had to iron things out during tribal council because things were blown out of crazy proportion. Apparently displayed racism is not tolerated in the states.

Dont know about you, but I feel we as Chinese people are generally pretty racist and judgemental.
It's like in our genetics to compare ourselves against the best... and worst.
Compare ourselves against the best to improve ourselves,
Compare against the worst to make ourselves feel better.

Sick of constantly the subject of comparison against the best.
Pricks, of course I'll look like the lackluster one what.
Thankful to be going England in another 1 month's time.

I almost always can't get the time to sneak in a decent post nowadays.

Anyhow, It's been a really hectic week.
Over the past week i've come to a certain realization that I have 6 papers to prepare for.
In 8 weeks time.
THE HORROR, ZOMG.

Anyway, hard as i try, the shadow keeps running after me.
I've tried to snuff the life and guilt out of the episode but it seems determined to stay alive.

Ever gave thought to how God decides who to keep and who to bin?
If only the line was clearer.. "Don't murder. Don't curse. Don't be promiscuous. Don't skip church"
But perhaps the line was intentionally kept fuzzy so that we would not just work toward the "passing" mark, as we so often do. Fuck the human nature.

I do believe in a higher spiritual authority.
I also believe there are consequences for living an unjustified life.
I believe in eternity. Just wish i could catch a glimpse of it sometimes.
So then, enlighten me. When praying to the almighty one,
Do i ask for fear or for joy?
But alas, you couldn't advise me.
No, you could advise me. But i would be wise not to listen.

The entire course of a person's life is defined into small milestones.
Those significant moments are defined in both the good and bad times. When your friends are either celebrating your successes or egging you on in the face or adversity.

It's France-Switzerland-Italy-Austria-Germany-Netherlands-Belgium-England-Sweden.
57 day eurotrip. Hearing myself saying it out loud is kinda surreal.
This is the kind of thing i've dreamed of since i was a young girl.
I mean like, after being romanced our whole lives by pictures of Paris,
how can anyone not wanna set foot there?
And all the cheese and spice markets in the piazzas of Italy.
Or the red light district of Amsterdam,
Or the sinking city of Venice.
So stoked. SO STOKED.

Of course the trip also comes with a hefty price.
Man, if it weren't for dad, I wouldn't even be looking through the tour catalogues.
Heck, i probably wouldn't even have gone on to university.
So much of what we have today is not ours to take credit for.
Our everyday luxuries, big or small, are very often the fruits of someone else's careful planning.

I owe so much to my family.
They, who have gone beyond providing the basic creature comforts and the weekly pocket money allowance.
Albeit belated, happy birthday Justin, and thank you Mom... and dad.

Anyhoos, with exams finally out of the way,
my schedule's more freed up now. Meeting more people, playing more guitar.
Most people would say the appropriate term would be "getting a life back"
Breath of fresh air.

For one, I met up with Kim at NUS to crash lectures together last week.
Man, crazy fun experience!!! Walked in on a new media lecture with a funky female lecturer.
Since my tertiary education consists of absolutely nothing save for engineering,
This means...
I never had a female lecturer. Much less never had one who laughed out loud with her students.
Felt so privileged can! Its like stumbling upon a diamond in the entire coal mine of lectures.
Engineering should be taught by fun and funky people man.
The most constipated, uptight people are be found in the engineering practice.
I swear.

Since we're on the topic,
new term has started and we're required to form groups for the various assignments.
WOAH. IT'S LIKE A CALL FOR SHIT STIRRERS TO COME OUT TO PLAY.
Everyone starts poaching and scheming and oh-my-gosh-its-horrible.
Thankfully, no there's no clawing and teeth-baring in my team.
Teammates are all pretty swell ♥♥
Okay. Understatement. I love them.

It has been so long!
Too long in fact. I miss blogging.
So it's the eve of what we affectionately call the "Main Course" of the exams.

Quick one because this is pretty much the only thing i have on my mind besides the papers.
I've been rationalising a certain commitment in my life.
One that takes away a weekday evening and practically my entire weekend.
Totalling the amount of hours travelled to and fro and the activities itself,
it comes up to about 13 hours a week. i.e. a whopping 52 hours.
AND TO WHAT END ONE MIGHT ASK.

13 hours. I salivate at the notion of having that much more spare time on hand.
For one, i would be studying at a much leisurely pace.
Shopping on a Sunday evening with the girlfriends would be great too.
It's not just about the time i'm losing.
My soul has become this black hole that's become to indifferent.
It's always 'Vanessa could you do this, could you do that'.
Well thank you very much. Im outta here.

And so here we are, at the end of yet another day of doing sound at DC.
Once again, I feel like i've been robbed of what could have been a fruitful day of rest/study.
Almost all my posts this month include angry rants about the same issue over and over.

And tomorrow's Monday all over again.
For the first time in 5 years, I can't do math problems. Vectors; Laplace.
I think studying in university is designed to make you feel inadequate and helpless.
Graduating with good grades just proves that you have risen above the system.
At least, that's what i want to believe.

Off to shower.
The plan tomorrow: Wake up early, grab a frappe from Starbucks and head for class.
Hopefully the coffee will help put my Sunday behind me.

Pastor Tan preached awesome today..
The "seeing clearly" and the hairdresser example.
This message really got me thinking.. Am i totally blind or seeing men like trees?
If i have not seen God in awhile, does that mean i've lost sight of the resurrection and salvation?

Hmm, anyway I asked a friend of mine in school if he wanted to join a service with me. His reply was something to this effect:
"I would prefer not to. All the new age christians i know have zero concept of punctuality. And you guys can't help but to either being too holy or running to opposite end of the spectrum".
I realize i couldn't defend that accusation; Too many people I know fall into (at least) one of the 3 cats above.
Myself included. (The last cat if you're wondering.)

Tomorrow. I will tell them tomorrow that I can't afford to serve every week of the month.
I won't even commit 3/4 weeks a month because i'm insolent like that.
2 weeks is all i've got to give.
Hoping this move will give me better vision.

School work is giving me enough problems as it is.
And... I should probably see less of G anyway.

SWEET JESUS, I'M SO TIRED!!!!

Tried to find a doctor across the road from JW but all the clinics were closed.
And so, here i am coughing, and occasionally gagging minutes before i turn in to sleep... :((

Serving was (again) very draining and everything is really starting to take its toll on me.
The guy with the horrid BO doesn't make anything better.
I swear the smell aggravated my condition 10 times over.
*Thanks for the pat on the back and the look of pity*

Came home feeling all foul and frustrated.
It's like everytime i try to pick myself up from the rubble, someone comes along and pulls a bazooka on me.

Pardon the language, but other words may misrepresent the actual experience.

Wow, Daughtry and Lambert made it worth every cent of the ticket cost.
And tonight, i say with confidence, has been (and will probably be) my best night of 2010.
Great to have caught it with Liyin and Clement, and Glenn in the crowd somewhere.

It has been awhile since i've written anything here.

Nothing much to pen down, really.
It's my holiday week now before school starts officially and i'm trying to cram everyone and every party into this one week.
Once school begins, these cant afford to be my priorities anymore.

For those who asked, Taiwan was good.
Glad i was able to go with my mum and spend time together.
on an overall scale of 1 to 10, i'd give taiwan a 6.5.

I have just checked on the Practice recording and i CANNOT play the cd. Did anyone of you checked on it?

I think the CD is still a blank CD and was not recorded at all. Can the 2 of you explain to me what happened?

I need to re-emphasize the importance of checking the CD especially right after recording, Please really test the cd and make sure is playing properly BEFORE passing it to me.

I hope this the last time that we record without checking, if not, we are just wasting our time.

If you are not sure of the recording procedures, always check with jamie or tavia.

All the arduous training has culminated into a glorious concert!!!
When i heard the the voice of the elderly echo through the hall, my heart melted.

To be honest, its the first time i heard the voice of the congregation.
And it was a beautiful sound. The elderly are definitely a force to be reckoned with.
Glad to be serving in the house.

Sacrificed my Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Went to accompany my mum to the doc today. She's down with fever.
We're trying out a new doc cos our previous family doctor's clinic was too unkept.
Plus, the nurses were unfriendly.

Anyway, new Doc is young and funny and awkward. I believe older doctor's lose their awkwardness over the years in the name of professionalism. Like how gynaecologists have zero libido because their so used to female anatomy. Wonder how true that is. Anyway, i ended up requesting for something for my skin after my mum came out.

After deciding on the prescription, he was saying "On this course of medicine, you should not even think of getting married or pregnant or becoming sexually active. Do you have a boyfriend now?" All in this very awkward manner! We burst out laughing after he said that. And he repeated the advice to my mum after everything as well. Awkward times two!

Haha, have to tell Evan this story.
My doc's very nice anyhow. Lemme know if you want his clinic details.

Oh, and to follow up on my previous post, they did not allow me to quit immediately.
My decided last day is next friday (23/7/2010)

A Gorilla and his Coat

She pissed me off today.
Had the last straw, and declared that i'm quitting.

As Gerald might put it, it was a xiao-sa moment.
But now that i think of it, by the end of this week i'll be jobless.
I join the ranks of the jobless low-life kind of organisms that bum around the house during the long vacations.

This post will serve as a mini reflection of my time in the pink office in Little India (:
From this job, I've learnt that management is everything.
If your team leader is active and engaging, everyone will follow suit.
But if damn sway, you get stuck with a lazy slug (who is also a lesbian), then prolly no point in staying put for long.
What i'm saying, is that managers should learn how to relate to people AND their scope of work. Not just talking rubbish.
In the way that wearing a suit doesn't make a gorilla any much lesser of a gorilla, having a team manager title doesn't automatically entitle you to team leadership. Gorillas also need to earn their coats.

Spent the evening thinking how i could maybe have improved the team spirit or make things better.
Decided i've done all i can. Tried to be the most positive, enthusiastic and fun person, but somehow all this positivity gets sucked into some black hole in some part of the office; the epicentre of this black hole, i suspect might be nearest to any of the manager's desk. hurhur.

Surely it must have been extremely traumatic if 2 different individuals quit on their first day of the job. I mean, unless the job is daunting and/or toxic, i would prolly never quit on the first day. At least hang around for a week ma.. give face.

Despite all my rantings, i'm proud that i managed to learn and take away so much from this 5 months. Glad that i've stumbled upon this small part of the corporate world which many of my peers have yet to see. Thankful for being able to speak to people from all over the Asia Pacific region, backgrounds and cultures. I've grown stronger and more careful (Really, my colleagues can testify haha) and ever more determined to do well in my course of study. More wary of bullshit and smoke-attempts too, may i add!

Working inevitably forces you to grow up in the most horrible and splendid of ways.
While this is all a rude shock from my dreams of being a power-player, we are once again reminded of the latin saying
"Nil Sine Labore".

Empathy is so important.
In a way, i'm glad that while i was going through some heavy stuff, my friends weren't having it too easy either. (Selfish, i know!)

Anyhow, this kinda opened a channel to talk and discuss our real problems. And it was comforting to know that I wasn't the only one struggling stay afloat.

Wa piang. People should stop telling me where or where not to put my money.

To people who have told me that even temples give our free food and churches dont..obviously you havent been to dialect church, where every elderly is given a perfectly packed and sumptous dinner.

To those who have told me tithing is full of shit, i dare you to compare our bank accounts. If you have more money in the bank than i have, or if your are earning more than me as a part time staff, then your accusation might just have some ground. Other than that, u have no say about tithing.

To those who have told me that my pastor and his wife are two-faced money suckers, you obviously have never seen what they do for a living, or never heard pastor speak more than twice. And besides, they aren't even getting paid from the church.

And lastly i've heard enough shit about "Why does the church need 310 million dollars to build a church? A simple one will do.." Yes, i'm sure everyone will appreciate having to boil in small auditorium with no air con; shitty lights and screechy sound system.

Of course money will have to be pumped into the aircon, lights and sound. Duh! and what's wrong with having a lil standard in the house of God? I say this is all just a weak attempt at tearing apart a worthwhile cause.

even if there is a rat in the system, it doesn't that you are above the church or any religious system. Some people are just so ready to put down any temple/church/goodwill organization just because it involves a large sum of money.

I swear, if i hear one more word about how i've been stupid to give my finances to the church, it'll be the end of the friendship man.

If you haven't already heard the news,
Dr Goh Keng Swee just passed away today.

I am shamed to say that prior to his death,
I knew nothing about him apart from his contribution to the SAF.
CNA was doing a tribute to him and i feel that we, as a nation, are indebted.

Dr Goh was the one who implemented the streaming system for schools.
While many were against the idea initially, coining it an atrocious idea, it later proved to be one of the many reasons why the Singapore education and our students came out (And continues to come out) tops in the world.
Today, every Singaporean can at least understand and speak basic English thanks to the efforts of this one man.
If he had wavered on the decision back then, solely because of its unpopularity, Singapore would not be where it was today.

We like to think that it is our people and location on the whole that has propelled our nation to success far beyond the rest of South East Asia.
But if one has the eyes, he will see that a people is only as great as its leaders.
For one thing, Dr Goh was not one to lead based merely by feeling, but rather, on what was most practical and beneficial to his people.

While he was not the most charismatic of persons, he certainly did the most splendid job at being the #2 man.
Thank you for showing us that change is possible, even for a stiff-necked people like us.
And that while changes may be hard to swallow, the effects of a simple change in the system can propel the entire population forward.

Photos are with Min Zhui, so none at the moment.

Hmm afterthoughts on the trip, HK is a really busy, cosmopolitan city. The transportation is exactly the same as Singapore's! Right down to the train features. Except that the waiting time per train isn't as long. What i felt is that Hong Kong is a colder, cantonese-speaking version of Singapore. Pretty enjoyed the city!

Besides Hong Kong, we visited Macau and China(ShenZhen.) Macau is really just one big casino/hotel island. But if you're there, you really have to visit the venetian city. I think i experienced what the queen of Sheba felt in 1 Kings 10 :
"⁴ And when the queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built, ⁵ the food on his table, the seating of his servants, the service of his waiters and their apparel, his cupbearers, and his entryway by which he went up to the house of the LORD, there was no more spirit in her."

i.e. she fainted in amazement. HAHA. It was that good.

Besides the venetian town, I really enjoyed meeting up with Kim and her friends in Lung Kuai Fong. It's like the clark quay of Hong Kong, very nice. We had a round of drinks and got home before 1am. Livin' it up!

Many more great experiences, especially with the food(glorious) and the friends we made there. Kim, if you're reading, i loved the UST! Thanks for bringing us around.

A few of my favorite memories:

1) It was pouring cats and dogs on the day we left, so i ran and took cover outside and LV store. There was a lady in a coat, after she closed the umbrella after her, she resumed smoking her ciggarette. Oh her poise and stature! Smoking isn't cool, but for this lady, i make a ready exception!

2) Our hostel is located in the heartlands of their "Little India", so there are lots of negros where we stay, which can make it pretty dangerous. They sexy-whistle at you, and just perve at any passing lady. Anyway the thing is, i was on a long-distance call with someone, and all the invading eyes were at it again, which was really uncomfortable. Literally EVERYONE was staring. As soon as i got off the phone i realised i was standing in front of a dildo shop -_- Dildos should be kept in sex shops, not in shopping malls sans any warning!

I firmly believe buying pleasure-giving items should be a private small moment. But i wouldn't know any better.

Hard to pen everything down in words. Gotta be there to soak it all in!

Anyway reality slams me right in my face.
Back to work on Monday.

Ahh, so many people have been asking about my job!
And because i've been living in the mountains recently, here's a small update to satiate your need to knows (:

Where are you working at?
Little India.Slightly opposite KK hospital.

What are you working as?
International customer care! I'll receive mountains of calls and emails from India/China/Korea/BlahBlah.. and singapore. And we have lived up to our name! So far Singaporeans are the worst customers to serve.. Not sure it's cos we have a better command of english and think we are entitled to trample on service staff or that it's a plain display of being Singaporean.. which is sad either way.

Do you like your job?
Can't say i love it.. But my colleages make it more bearable. Decided to stick with this till i go to a university cos i really think it's good training ground for me. It is however, stretching me very thin. The stress is causing my pimples to surface, and honestly, i feel horrid looking at my skin everyday. Emotional turmoil.

Most importantly..When will you be free to meet me?
Thursdays,Saturdays and Sundays are off limits. But other than that, I'm free for the taking :D

Okay finally updates!

We didn't go for Paramore in the end. Sold the pair of tix cos i was kinda depressed that we weren't going for xiao jin teng( aka BJB of Taiwan..See earlier posts). So the 3 of us traded the red-haired rocker for a nice dinner along clark quay.

The only nagging thing on my mind since November has been resolved. Wouldn't have happened if it weren't for 2 very sane guys who spoke into my life. So thank you, or infecting me with your sanity. I am grateful.

Dear diary, I was secretly envious of HZ when he said he was gonna be studying economics in NUS come august. Sitting beside him yesterday, i felt like the dumbest and dullest person in the country. Back in poly i couldn't even invest that much effort on myself and my future. I resent myself for being so shortsighted. For that, I'm a complete klutz. I need to be more self driven. I smell a new resolution : 2010, be more self driven toward my own success. Note to self : Start with the little things.

Grandma just passed away on Sunday morning
At the wake yesterday, there were so many cousins i've never met
And the aunties and uncles, walao, really never knew i had a family on the other side.
I have this really pretty cousin
and an auntie who tatooed her forearm as a memento of her dead parrot
Out of this world man.

After the wake, headed to clark quay/robertson quay for dinner

Its New year's eve.
Shall take time to remember some highlights of 2009
So, in no particular order of impact...

#1 SOT
Gosh. Need i say more? SOT has taught me so much more than theology. Made tons of great, godly friends this year. Friends that care about my welfare and all (: Could i ask for better individuals in my life? And it's not just the friends, I believe the experiences in SOT made me a stronger person by the grace of God. The most memorable lesson i've learnt? That one can make a difference. To a society, a nation and the entire world.

#2 India
I love this country. India is still fresh at the back of my mind. Will probably remember the 2 weeks i've spent there for life. Once again, if i hadn't known Jeba, Grace and Joyel from SOT, i would probably never have been able to go there to immerse myself into their culture.

#3 Guitarring
'09 is the year where i really got serious about my guitar(playing in cg did help the seriousness). Music nourishes my soul, deep and good. I'm glad for all the opportunities to play in cg and for the elderly. I hope there's more platforms to learn and play next year . Yay.

#4 MJ's Death
Wow. His death was so sudden and it really shook me (and the rest of the world). MJ's passing hit me because i've loved him since i was a kid, and he was a real hero to me. Watching "This is It" was a great memory to me because it seal my memory of his as the greatest performer ever. Its actually one of my regrets that i've never watched him perform live before. One of my most private wishes is to watch Bon Jovi perform while he's still alive. Why doesn't singapore make artistes like them?

#5 Mau's Basketball Match at UWC
My happiest day this year! Spent no money someore. Caught the match with Vonne, Yelena and Kah Hern. Lots of love!

Pastor Kong preached a great word at the candlelight service.
I think it was the best service i'd attended this year!
The real life examples and the inmate-parent racing story really spoke to me
Heart tugging stories.
It was a 5 point sermon but i was already tearing at the 4th.

How You love us indeed.
Your presence. I really needed that (:
God is always on time, And he never shortchanges the faithful.
My desire, is to capture what i felt in that service, in my music someday.
Yes, that is what i want from all my playing and practise.

Worship must go higher.
Prayer must grow deeper.
